Math.

Screen Shot 2013-10-28 at 10.24.41 AMThis app reminds me of Khan Academy, but it only contains lessons from four mathematics courses – Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2.  Also, it is a lot more costly than Khan Academy – more on that below.

Students can either search for a lesson or choose one from the listed courses.  Each course contains between 9 – 13 chapters (read chapter titles below).  Each chapter has at least a dozen lessons/concepts.  Each lesson/concept provides an extensive opportunity to view examples, practice, be challenged, complete a self-test, and have access to worksheets and notes.  Many of the examples link to video clips that explain each concept.

Although this app is free to obtain, only the first five lessons completed are complimentary.  After that, courses can be purchased in-app for $9.99 each or all of them for a total of $39.99.  Proceed cautiously; the price of this app can quickly become steep.  Khan Academy may be a better fit for your situation.

Also, please note that a wifi connection (or 3G) is required to access the bulk of each lesson’s content.

Book Creator

Screen Shot 2013-10-22 at 10.37.18 PMThis app allows users to effortlessly create anything from a simple to complex book.  After choosing from portrait, landscape, or square orientation, the process is unbelievably simple.  Begin by adding text.  You can choose from all fonts installed on the device.  Also change the font’s size and color; make some or all words italicized, bold, or underlined.  Photos (and videos) can be added from the device’s library or directly from the camera, then moved and resized as needed.  Finally, sound can be recorded from within the app or imported from elsewhere on the device.

Completed books can be opened in a variety of apps on the device – such as in iBooks.  But each can also be exported to iTunes or as a PDF (no audio/video capability with this option).

Use the free version to make one book before committing to the paid version.

Starlight – Mobile Planetarium

Screen Shot 2013-10-07 at 8.04.53 AMMake the solar system come alive for your child by the use of this app!  It uses the device’s internal navigation system to display which constellations, stars, and other parts of the solar system are currently in the sky above (the Location service must be on when using an Apple device).  It also lists the space objects that are currently below the horizon where you are.

Tapping a constellation, star, or other part of the solar system brings up a brief informative paragraph to read and an accompanying picture.

Note that there’s an in-app option to purchase the Planetary Sounds Pack to access sounds captured by several space crafts.

Brushes 3

Screen Shot 2013-08-26 at 9.51.35 PMYour budding young artist will enjoy this painting app.

After selecting a blank white canvas, students can…

  • Choose any color on the color wheel
  • Change the thickness of the brush (between 1 – 100 pixels)
  • Give the brush strokes a texture
  • Use the eraser tool
  • Undo and redo on an unlimited basis

The app also records the entire painting process – stroke by stroke.  The completed painting can be added to the native Photos app, copied, mailed, or sent to Flickr.

For a free app, the smoothness and accuracy of the brush strokes is impressive!  The free version does not support layers, but they can be added via an in-app purchase.

Line Art

Screen Shot 2013-08-21 at 2.00.08 PMThis simple art app responds to a student’s touch on the device.  Depending on what they do (tap, swipe, lay down a palm, etc.), the app responds in various ways and leaves behind colorful lines.  The app seems like it’s alive as millions of tiny particles move and respond.  The particles (and subsequent designs) change color on their own.  The ‘Sticky Fingers’ option causes the design effect to linger, rather than disappear as soon as the device is no longer touched.

The app comes with the option to take a picture of created designs; the pictures are automatically saved on the device.

Real Piano HD Pro

Screen Shot 2013-08-14 at 9.11.47 PMOf course even an app called Real Piano can not take the place of a real piano.  But, this app is about as close as one is going to get.  I do not play piano myself, therefore it is a little difficult to evaluate the accuracy of the notes.  But this app is quite robust and would make a fine addition to a music-friendly classroom environment.

Students have access to the entire 88-key piano.  But they will have to choose between one of three keyboards – single, dual, or separate.  Obviously, not all 88 keys can be shown at once.

They also have access to several other customization options.  They can change the style for the labels on the keys (or actually hide the labels altogether).  The seventh note can also be changed to be spelled ‘si’ or ‘ti’. They can also change the notation types of the key labels.  The piano can easily be tuned as well within the settings and customization options.

In addition to the piano, students can also access sounds from a guitar, bass guitar, harp, music box, and marimba.

Perhaps the most impressive feature is the ability to record the music played in this app. Recordings can be played back immediately or sent via email or to iTunes.  Three recorded songs come prerecorded into the app – Romance d’Amour, Happy Birthday, and Back: Prelude in C Major.

Pic Collage

Screen Shot 2013-07-09 at 9.31.53 PMStudents have the opportunity to creatively arrange photographs into collages in this app.  They can use the device’s camera to take pictures on the spot or they can import pictures that are already on the device.  They can also import pictures from the internet (by performing a simple search) and add text and/or stickers to each collage.  They can also add frames and/or backgrounds to each collage.

Once photos are added to the collage, a simple tap brings up options to edit the photo, edit the border, clip the photo, set the photo as the background, or copy the photo.  The photo editor allows users to enhance, add effects to, focus, and draw on the photo.

I’m impressed with the number of ‘free’ backgrounds, fonts, and stickers that come with this app.  However, make a note that additional sets of stickers can be obtained via in-app purchases.

Completed collages can be shared via social networking sites, saved to the device’s library, or emailed.  It also comes with the neat option to send a postcard of the collage (for a fee, of course).

Creative possibilities are endless with this app; it will quickly become a favorite for many students!

U. S. Presidents!

Screen Shot 2013-06-20 at 9.52.56 PMThis simple (but free) app provides very basic information about all U. S. presidents.  It’s good as a quick reference, but certainly wouldn’t do much good if students had to conduct research for a major project.  Students can view the presidents in an ordered list or choose a president at random.

Here’s the information for President Barack Obama.

  • Term: 2009 – Present
  • Party: Democratic
  • Born: August 4, 1964
  • Currently living
  • Born in: Hawaii
  • Religion: Christian
  • Inaugurated at age: 47
  • First African-American President

Google Translate

Screen Shot 2013-05-18 at 10.05.07 PMWhile this may be considered more of a travel app, I believe it also has a place in an educational setting.  Like any app, it’s important to teach students when it’s appropriate to use an app such as this.

Here are the key features as listed in the built-in User’s Guide.

  • Translate text between 57 languages
  • Translate by voice by speaking the text instead of typing it
  • Listen to your translations
  • Display translations in full screen mode to make it easier for others to read
  • Star your favorite translations for quick access even when you’re offline
  • Access your translation history even when you’re offline
  • Spell out the translation of non-Latin script languages in Latin characters to read it phonetically
  • Supplemental bilingual dictionary results for single words or short phrases
